GCHS head coach Tony Chacon is back at the helm as head coach of the girls team after spending the past three years as the junior varsity coach for the Red Devil boys basketball squad. Prior to that, Chacon served as the head coach of the GCHS girls for seven seasons.
“I’m excited and happy to be back,” said Chacon. “Even though we’ve only had two weeks of practice, we have high expectations. The girls have really been working hard.”.
Chacon’s assistant coaches are Allison Brown, Randy Martin, and Ryon Jones.
Chacon said this year’s team includes three new players that have transferred from other schools within the past year – senior Shailee Croasmun and her sophomore sister Talaunee Croasmun played for the Carbon Lady Dinos last year, and junior Sadie Hansen played for Green River.
Other seniors on this year’s Lady Devils squad include Teaven Fredericks, Alexandra Gomez, Miranda Shumway, Alena Geiser, Mercedes James, Jacey Johnson and Ayesis Charleston, most of whom have varsity playing experience. Other returning varsity players include junior Brook Schultz and sophomores Symony Call and Madi Jones. Sophomore Lauren Drake is expected to contribute at both the junior varsity and varsity levels.
The Red Devil junior varsity squad is expected to feature several freshmen, including Anissa Geiser, Delanee Olsen, Sarah Day and Krystal Beck, along with sophomore Vania Henry.
The Lady Devils are also scheduled to play Pinnacle Academy at Moab next Tuesday, Dec. 3, with the varsity game starting at 7 p.m. After that, the Lady Devils will have a handful of road games throughout December before their next home game on Saturday, Jan. 4, against Monticello.
