“I think as a team, we are in pretty good shape, although we are still missing a couple spots in the lineup,” said GCHS coach Dennis Wells. “We also had a couple wrestlers injured.”
Wrestling at 132 pounds, GCHS junior Jacob Francis won both of his matches on Friday, Nov. 20. Francis defeated both Taylon Payne of Milford and Cody Curtis of Richfield by decision before getting pinned by Piute’s Zach Allen, who went on to win the championship.
Francis suffered a dislocated shoulder during his loss to Allen and is expected to miss at least the next few weeks of the season. Francis ended up taking sixth place in the 132-pound category at the meet.
Dexter Sheets, a senior, placed highest for the Red Devils’ in the tournament. Sheets made it to the finals in the 120-pound weight class before losing to Tayten Babb of Delta.
Fellow Red Devil Gage Lindquist also advanced to the semifinals in that same weight class, but Sheets ended up winning a narrow decision over Lindquist in order to advance to the finals. Sheets ended up in second place in the 120-pound division, while Lindquist placed sixth.
Also placing for Grand at the meet was 152-pound senior Trenton White, who took third in his weight class by winning four of his five matches. GCHS junior Edgar Gomez went 2-2 and finished in fourth place in the heavyweight category.
The Red Devils’ next scheduled wrestling meet is a dual meet at Monticello on Wednesday, Dec. 5. Then, on Friday and Saturday, Dec. 7 and 8, Grand will travel to Nephi to participate in another invitational tournament, the Juab Winter Classic.
Grand’s first home match will be a dual meet against the San Juan Broncos on Dec. 19.
