GCHS mountain bike team makes strong showing in SLC

The Grand County High School mountain biking team put in another strong performance at their second race of the season.

On Saturday, Sept. 22, the team traveled to the Sherwood Hills Golf Course in Salt Lake City for a tough competition on a very challenging route. While the team only entered three bikers in the competition, all of whom were underclassmen, each gave admirable performances on the difficult course.

“We did good,” said head coach Christa Green. “The course in Sherwood Hills was a lot tougher than what we’ve normally had. There were more hills at higher altitude and more climb.”

GCHS freshman Preston Bagley rode home with the gold for the second time, taking first place in the Division I freshman boys competition. According to Green, Bagley is now ranked first in the division statewide.

Grand’s two sophomores also rode well in the sophomore Division II competition, with Tyren Flanders finishing 18th and Jamie Marshall finishing 13th overall.

Despite the challenging conditions, Green said the boys improved over their last competition.

“Our times were better. The boys are sticking it out every race,” Green said. “They’re also showing really good sportsmanship; shaking their opponents’ hands after every race, and really setting a new kind of precedent.”

The boys will have another chance to compete this weekend, when they travel to Lambert Park in Alpine, Utah on Saturday, Oct. 6. That race will be their final race before the championship competition in Soldier Hollow on Oct. 20.
