Free Health Clinic names first full-time executive director

The Moab Free Health Clinic (MFHC) recently hired its first full-time executive director after six years of service to the Moab community. Moab resident Beth Joseph officially began work as the clinic’s executive director on July 2.

“This position is a really good fit for me. It’s work that I care about and that I’ve been wanting to do,” Joseph said last week. “I wanted to find a way to make a living doing community service, and for the first time it’s worked out.”

The MFHC has been searching for funding for a full-time executive director for several months, said founder and board president Danette Johnson. With funding from a private donor, the clinic put out the call for applicants in early May.

“We’ve been caught in a vicious cycle. It’s very difficult to find funding for salaries,” said Johnson. “We’re all very excited that we could finally make this happen.”

Having a full-time director will open new doors for the MFHC through other paid positions, expansion into a larger facility and new programs.

“We’re at maximum capacity right now between medical and mental health services, educational programs, prescription assistance and patient navigation services. It’s amazing that we’ve been able to do so much with a part-time director, two VISTA volunteers, a volunteer board, and volunteer providers,” Johnson said.

Through her role as executive director, Joseph will supervise the Moab Free Health Clinic’s operations, oversee the volunteer and program coordinators (currently AmeriCorps VISTA volunteer positions), manage finances, solicit donations, write grants, maintain relationships with donors and form community partnerships.

“I’m hoping that my community connections and understanding of nonprofits will help build on all the hard work that has been done and can take the Clinic to the next level,” Joseph said. “We will try to provide more services and solidify funding streams to make sure our programs stay well funded and sustainable.”

Joseph was chosen from among 11 other qualified candidates for the position due to her experience with nonprofit organizations and the VISTA program, as well as budgeting experience, financial management and her involvement in the community, Johnson said.

“Beth has all the qualities we were looking for. She’s the right person for the job,” Johnson said. “I can see the clinic rising to new heights over the next couple of years under Beth’s direction.”

Joseph said she is excited about the opportunity to help the clinic grow.

“I’m so thrilled to be part of the team and to be able to expand to more parts of the community and form new relationships for the clinic,” she said.
