Forum to focus on abolishing ‘corporate personhood’ by amending U.S. Constitution

Occupy Moab will host a community forum called “Creating Democracy and Challenging Corporate Rule” with guest speaker David Cobb of the Move to Amend campaign. The free event will be held Saturday, May 12 at the Moab Arts and Recreation Center, 111 East 100 North, from 6 to 8 p.m.

Cobb, an attorney and organizer for the Move to Amend coalition, will discuss the history behind the 2010 U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling in Citizens United v. FEC, which gives corporations the same constitutional rights as human beings regarding political contributions, and efforts to abolish "corporate personhood" through an amendment to the U.S. Constitution.

“Corporate personhood is not an inconsequential legal technicality. The Supreme Court ruled that a corporation was a ‘legal person’ with 14th Amendment protections before they granted full personhood to African-Americans, immigrants, natives, or women,” Cobb said in a news release. “...We are a diverse coalition with deep roots in communities nationwide. We recognize that amending the Constitution to restore the power of the people over corporations will not be easy, but we know correcting the Supreme Court is imperative to the progress of our nation.”

The forum will focus on how the citizens of Moab can “join the national movement against corporate personhood,” according to the news release.

Almost 200,000 people have signed an online petition supporting the Constitutional amendment at www.MoveToAmend.org.
