On Saturday, May 10 from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m., unwanted electronics and batteries may be dropped off at the Community Recycle Center, 1000 Sand Flats Rd. Almost anything that plugs in or runs on batteries will be accepted, except for freon- or coolant-containing items such as refrigerators, freezers, or air conditioners.
Metech Recycling will collect the electronics waste and batteries and deconstruct them into their individual components such as plastics, glass and metals. Approximately 45 percent of those components can be reused in other manufacturing, according the CCR officials. Metech also guarantees data security and can provide tracking information for any electronics dropped off at the drive.
Also on May 10 from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m., at Bob’s Sanitation/Transfer Station, 2295 S. U.S. 191, the Grand County Solid Waste District will be working with Veolia Environmental Services to collect and recycle a variety of different types of household hazardous waste. Aerosol cans, all-purpose cleaners, antifreeze, asbestos materials, batteries, compressed gas tanks, fire extinguishers, fluorescent light bulbs, gasoline/fuels, glues/adhesives, medical/biological waste (sharps), mercury thermometers, motor oil/lubricants, paints/stains, pcb-related materials, pesticides/herbicides, photography chemicals, propane tanks, smoke detectors and solvents/thinners will be accepted. All materials must be in amounts of no more than 5 gallons and should be kept in original containers if possible.
Both events are free to the public, but CCR encourages per-pound donations at the electronics and battery drive to help fund future recycling events in Moab.
Business or commercial waste will not be accepted at the household hazardous waste drive. Electronics from businesses will be accepted, but businesses will be charged the cost of recycling the materials ($0.25 per pound for electronics and $2 per pound for batteries).
Friday pick-up is available for businesses, nonprofits and government agencies for a small fee plus the recycling cost. For more information, or to arrange a business pick-up, contact CCR at 435-210-4996 or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
