BLM seeks comments on non-motorized trail near Sand Flats

The Bureau of Land Management, Moab field office has released an environmental assessment for public comment on a proposed bicycle and foot trail that would connect the power dam area with Sand Flats Road.

Trail Mix, the Grand County-sponsored non-motorized trail committee, has proposed constructing an alternative non-motorized route from the power dam area to the Sand Flats Road by creating a non-motorized trail 1.3 miles in length, according to a news release from the BLM Moab office.

Although the route is primarily on Utah School and Institutional Trust Lands Administration property, two portions of the route cross BLM-managed land. The BLM portion of the trail crossing Mill Creek is about 500 feet long and is primarily on old routes, BLM officials said. A footbridge would span Mill Creek at that location.

The portion of the route crossing BLM land near the Sand Flats Road is about 1,200 feet long and is mostly on slickrock, according to the BLM. The proposed trail would be located between the Sand Flats Road and the power dam parking area.

The public comment period runs through July 24. The environmental assessment is available online at the Utah BLM Electronic Notification Bulletin Board, www.blm.gov/ut/enbb. Hard copies are available at the Moab BLM field office, 82 E. Dogwood, Moab, UT 84532 or by calling 259-2100. Comments should be sent to Katie Stevens at the Moab field office address.
